BREAKFAST WITH CHRIST
TOPIC: SELF RIGHTEOUSNESS VRS CHRIST RIGHTEOUSNESS
SCRIPTURE: MATTHEW 5:20
"For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven."
Welcome to BWC. Righteousness is a state of being justified or being right before God. The truth however is that a Christian on his/her own cannot be justified before God. Any attempt to be justified on our own before God is self righteousness.
In our scripture today, Jesus told us that our righteousness must exceed that of the Pharisees. The Pharisees were people who practised self righteousness. They were right in their own eyes. They felt they could be justified before God by practising human laws.
A self righteous person feels he/she is always right and never wrong. Such a person condemns everybody and ignores his own flaws. A self righteous person feels he can be justified before God by simply being good.
In the scriptures, Jesus warned us against being self righteous. As Christians, our righteousness is from Jesus Christ. We can never be righteous on our own. There is nothing we can do on our own to be righteous before God.
When Jesus died, he took our sins and gave us His nature of righteousness. Every Christian who has accept Jesus Christ is righteous. You cannot be a Christian and not be righteous. Righteousness is not what we do, it is who we are.
Being justified through the Blood of Christ, we need to now walk in the righteousness that Christ gave us. We need to abide by the word of God and live a holy life. Let's repent from all self righteousness and hold on to Christ. We are nothing without Him.
