DEALING WITH HABITUAL SINS
Habitual sins are sins that a believer continues to struggle with regularly even after being born again. We battle each day to overcome these habitual sins. There are many Christians who are struggling with one sin or the other. The Bible calls these "sin which so easily entangles us" Hebrews 12:1. So how do we deal with these sins?
UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS
"In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus". Roman's 6:11.
To deal with a habitual sin, we need to understand that Jesus defeated sin on our behalf on the Cross. Sin is a defeated enemy. If we have accepted Christ, we must also see ourselves as dead to sin and alive in Christ. Sin has no power over the believer.
POWERLESS WITHOUT GOD
We certainly can't do anything without the Spirit of God. We cannot deal with habitual sins without the Grace of God. We derive our strength from the spirit of God. So we must depend solely on the Spirit of God to help us overcome these entangling sins.
IMPORTANCE OF PRAYER AND THE WORD
One sure way of dealing with habitual sins is to fill our spirits with the Word of God. The only way we can do this is to spend time reading the Word and meditating on it. The word of God is powerful. It can cut through any entangling sin.
We must also spend enough time in prayer. A prayerless Christian is spiritually weak and dead. We cannot overcome these sins if we don't pray. Prayer gives us strength. Prayer makes us less prone to fall for habitual sins.
SELF CONTROL AND SELF DISCIPLINE
We cannot downplay the importance of self control and self discipline in dealing with these sins. Self control is a fruit of the Spirit(Galatians 5). We need to be able to control our carnal desires. These desires when not controlled give birth to sin.
Self discipline is also very important in dealing with habitual sins. We need to be disciplined enough to always choose God over satisfying our carnal desires. It takes self discipline to always say NO to sin.
AVOIDING BANANA PEELS
To overcome habitual sins, you must avoid things that will make you fall. Avoid listening, watching and reading things that will send you back to the sins you have repented from. You must also avoid people who will make you fall.
May the Lord give us the Grace to overcome these sins. We cannot have a good relationship with God when we are still entangled with these daily sins.
If you are battling a habitual sin in your life, please don't give up. Don't get discouraged. Allow Jesus Christ to deal with that sin in your life. Wholly surrender to the Lord. Continue praying and trusting God to help you overcome these sins daily.
