TOPIC: THE SPIRIT OF BACKSLIDING

SCRIPTURE: JEREMIAH 3:12

"Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever."

Welcome to BWC. To backslide is to temporarily fall away from Christ. To backslide is to lose your passion, faith and desire for God. Only a believer can backslide. To backslide doesn't necessarily mean to lose your salvation at once.

Unfortunately, the spirit of backsliding has become so common among believers. There are many of us who have lost our fire for God. We no longer have the desire to pray, study our Bibles or even serve God. The things of this world are gradually taking us away.

Today, God is calling us back to Himself. There are several reasons why believers backslide from Christ. Some of these reasons are:sin, prayerlessness, carelessness. Sin takes us away from God. If we allow sinful habits to take roots in our hearts, we will surely backslide.

Prayerlessness also causes us to backslide. A believer who isn't praying is playing. We gain a lot of power from prayer. If you don't pray regularly, sin will grow in your heart. It is either sin keeps you from praying or praying will keep you from sin. A believer cannot survive without praying.

Another cause of backsliding is carelessness. We backslide when we begin to take the Grace of God for granted. The Grace of God saved us from sin, it doesn't save us to continue sinning. When sin becomes normal in our lives, we will surely backslide.

If you don't pray as you used to, if you no longer read your Bible frequently, if you no longer have the passion to do God's work, if you find yourself returning to your old sins, then you are on the dangerous path of backsliding. God is calling you to repentance today.

To backslide is to move away from God. But you can still move back to God. He is a merciful God. If you find yourself in this state today, please just genuinely come before God and repent. Renew your passion and love for God. Please don't stay in the sin of backsliding, return to Jesus Christ today.
