Breakfast With Christ - The Battle For Supremacy

BREAKFAST WITH CHRIST

TOPIC: THE BATTLE FOR SUPREMACY

SCRIPTURE: GALATIANS 5:17

"For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want".

Welcome to BWC. As Christians, we are involved in all sorts of spiritual battles. There is however one battle that is common to all of us; the battle for supremacy between our spirits and our flesh.

The Greek word used for flesh in Galatians 5 is "sarx" which refers to the "sinful state of human beings". When a person becomes born again, there is a spiritual metamorphosis that takes place in the newly born again Christian. The person's sinful nature changes to the righteousness of Christ Jesus.

Even though, spiritually, every believer is righteous through Jesus Christ, we are still in this corrupted flesh. Our corrupted flesh will only give way at the point of death or when the rapture happens. For now, our flesh wages a daily battle against our spirits for control. This happens in every believer.

Our renewed spirit desires the things of God but our flesh desires carnal pleasure. For instance, your spirit would want you to wake up and pray but your flesh would want you to sleep. Your spirit would want you to put the T.V off to read your Bible but your flesh will say no. Your spirit would push you to avoid fornication but your flesh will continue to push you to lust. There is a battle for supremacy.

So how do we win this daily battle? Thankfully, Paul provided us a solution in Galatians 5:16. To defeat the desires of our flesh, we need to walk in the Spirit of God. To walk in the spirit means to focus on the things of God. Each day, our focus has to be living for God. Sin must not be a deliberate choice we make every day.

Again, Paul advised us to crucify our fleshy desires(Gal.5:24). We need to live above our flesh. We cannot do things simply because we feel like doing them. What ever we do must be to please God. If it won't please God, there is no need doing it. Our desire must be to satisfy the Will of God not our own will.

The fact that you are tempted to sin does not mean you are not Born Again, it only means your flesh is at work. You need to resist it. We need to wake up each day to defeat the desires of our flesh, that's the only way we can live for God. Let us remember we belong to Jesus not ourselves. Hence, we can't live the way we want.

PRAYER LINE

Lord, I belong to you. Please help me live above the sinful desires of my flesh. Amen.
