BREAKFAST WITH CHRIST
TOPIC: FIVE LOAVES, TWO FISH
SCRIPTURE: MATTHEW 14:19
"And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people."
Welcome to BWC. Today, we look at how Jesus fed over 5000 people with only five loaves of bread and two fish. Many a time, when we read this scripture, we get awed by the miracle of feeding thousands of men with only five loaves of bread and two fish. Only Jesus could have done that.
It was a wonderful miracle. But the focus of our devotion today isn't about the feeding of the people. There is one very important aspect of that miracle that most of us ignore or take for granted. When Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, He did something remarkable, He GAVE THANKS TO GOD.
Jesus is the Son of God. He is part of the triune God. But He found it necessary to give thanks before sharing the bread. Could Jesus have gone ahead without giving thanks? Absolutely Yes. He was Jesus Christ anyway. All powers belong to Him.
Jesus however gave thanks to God as an example for us. We need to learn to give thanks even if we don't have enough. If we can give thanks for the "little" things God does for us, He will do bigger things for us. If we can be faithful in small things, God will give us bigger things.
If you pay close attention to that miracle, you would realize that after Jesus gave thanks, the bread and the fish miraculously multiplied. Over 5000 people ate to their fulfillment and they even had twelve baskets extra. That is the power of thanksgiving.
Most of us don't know how to appreciate small things. Even in our human relationships, we hardly appreciate "small" gifts or acts of kindness from our fellow humans. Unfortunately, we extend that attitude towards God too.
We spend so much time asking God for big things without showing appreciation for the things He is already doing for us. How easy it is for us to take God's blessings for granted. We wake up from bed with some slight body pains then we begin to complain to God. What about thanking Him for the gift of life first?
We put our requests before God and when we don't get answers within a short while, we feel God no longer answers questions. What about the many things He has done for you without you even asking?
In all situations, we need to thank God. He knows best. He has His own time. Let's be more appreciative of God. Let's praise God no matter the difficulties we face. It is only in being thankful for what God is doing for us that He will do more. A grateful heart is a happy heart. Stay blessed.
PRAYER LINE:
Thank you Father, for all your blessings upon me. Amen.
