BREAKFAST WITH CHRIST
TOPIC: PILLAR OF SALT
SCRIPTURE: GENESIS 19:26
"But his wife looked behind him and she became a pillar of salt."
Welcome to BWC. Today, we look at one of the most popular stories in the Bible. Lot was Abraham's nephew. They both stayed in the plains of Canaan until a misunderstanding broke up between their herdsmen. Lot decided to move to Sodom. In Sodom, he lived with wicked people who hated God. God decided to destroy the city.
Lot however was a righteous man so God sent an angel to warm him to leave the city. God's instruction was clear "do not look behind you" Genesis 19:17. Whilst they were on their way out, Lot's wife however looked back and she instantly turned into a pillar of salt. Let's look at three lessons we can pick from this.
1. GOD REWARDS AND PUNISHES
God is a just God. No doubt about this. When the iniquities of Sodom became too much, God punished them. Everything that happened in Sodom is happening today, the only reason God hasn't yet destroyed this world is because He is giving us the time to repent and be saved through Jesus Christ. As much as God hates sins and punishes, He also rewards those who are faithful to Him. God had to warn Lot and took Him out of the city before He destroyed it.
2. GOD HATES DISOBEDIENCE
Throughout Scripture, one of the things God severely punishes is disobedience. God completely abhors disobedience. Anytime we disobey God, we sin against Him. The instruction of God to Lot and his family was simple yet Lot's wife decided to disobey and she received her punishment. We need to walk in obedience before God.
3. MATERIALISM LEADS TO DESTRUCTION
Materialism is "a tendency to consider material possessions and physical comfort as more important than spiritual values". The Bible is clear on this "Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them" 1 John 2:15. We cannot love God and love material things at the same time.
Lot was a very wealthy man who was leaving behind a lot of possession in Sodom. It wasn't recorded why his wife turned back, the most probable answer is that she turned to look once more at the riches and comfort they were leaving behind. She loved the material things more than obeying God and she turned into a pillar of salt.
Brethren, if we want to walk with God, we need to abide strictly by the instructions of God. Obedience is very necessary. As God rewarded Lot for his faithfulness, God will also reward us if we stay faithful to His Word and avoid being materialistic. All material things are temporary, we need to put God first and focus on our salvation. Stay blessed.
PRAYER LINE:
Lord, please help me to put you first in my life. Help me to obey your Word. Amen
