"And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment"
Welcome to BWC. Today we continue our lessons into the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
THE HOLY SPIRIT LEADS US TO REPENTANCE
In our scripture for today, Jesus told us that the Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin. To convict the world is to make the world guilty of their sins and come into repentance. Jesus was obviously referring to unbelievers in this scripture, however, the Holy Spirit performs a similar role in our lives when we become Christians.
CONVICTS THE WORLD
What makes the Word of God potent in the ears of the unbeliever is the Spirit of God backing the Word. It is the Holy Spirit that makes an unbeliever feels guilty of his/her sins and repents. Leading a sinner to salvation is a work of the Holy Spirit. The Christian's duty is to preach the Gospel to unbelievers, the rest of the work is done by the Holy Spirit. Without the conviction of the Holy Spirit, a sinner would never become aware of his sinful state and decide to repent.
HELPS CHRISTIANS TO REPENT
For us Christians, the Holy Spirit performs a similar role in our lives. This role is extremely important. Even though we are Christians, we are not perfect or infallible. We sin once in a while. When this happens, the Holy Spirit reminds us of our mistakes and lead us to repentance.
One strong indicator of the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life is the way you feel when you do something you shouldn't do. Any Christian who has the Holy Spirit will feel guilty when he/she sins. The Holy Spirit doesn't remind us of our sins so that we remain in the guilt, but He does this for us to repent and walk in holiness. When sinning becomes normal to you, if nothing pushes you to repent when you sin then your relationship with the Holy Spirit is very weak.
There are things we do that we are not even aware are sins against God. It is the work of the Holy Spirit to make us aware of our sins and lead us to repent. Without this crucial work of the Holy, we will remain in our sins and perish. . When we are feeling so guilty because we have sinned, the Holy Spirit reminds us of God's love for us. This helps us to go back to God and ask for forgiveness. The ultimate work of the Holy Spirit is to preserve believers till the day of judgement. We thank God for His spirit. Stay blessed.
