BREAKFAST WITH CHRIST

TOPIC: THE OLD VRS NEW COVENANT

SCRIPTURE: HEBREWS 8:8 "But God found fault with the people and said: "The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah".

Welcome to BWC, today, we will start a two part series into a very important topic. When Jesus resurrected, He established a NEW COVENANT between man and God. This is the covenant based on the Blood of Christ. However, before this covenant, there was an old one. We will take a look at the old covenant today.

THE OLD COVENANT The Bible as we have it now is divided into two parts: The Old and New Testament. The New Testament starting from Matthew was written about 400 years after the last prophetic book in the Old Testament, Malachi.

The Old Testament is based on the old Covenant between God and the Israelites. This covenant was established through Moses when He received the Ten Commandments from God(Exodus 20). In this old Covenant, the Israelites were to strictly obey rules and regulations as given by God. This covenant too was based on the blood of animals which was used as an atonement for the sins of the Israelites.

Once in a year, the High Priest went into the inner room of the temple to offer animal sacrifices for the atonement of the sins of the people. The people had no direct access to God. God however saw the stress the people were going through trying to abide by the tenets of this covenant, so He promised them a new covenant(Hebrews 8:8).

Through out all the major prophetic books in the Old Testament, the coming of the Messiah was prophesied. In Isaiah 53, there was a major prophesy about the birth and death of the Messiah. It however took about 700 years for Isaiah's prophesy to materialize.

In the 28th year of Augustus Caesar's reign as the Emperor of Rome, the Saviour of the world was finally born(Luke 2:1). However, thirty three(33) years after His birth, during the Reign of Emperor Tiberius Caesar, Jesus died on the Cross fulfilling all the prophesies written about Him. On the third day, He triumphantly resurrected to establish the New Covenant which we are all beneficiaries of today.

In our next BWC, we will look at the details of this New Covenant established by the Blood of Jesus Christ. Stay blessed!

Payer line: Lord, thank you for your Grace that wiped away all my sins and reconciled me back to you through Jesus Christ. Amen
