Breakfast With Christ - The Poor In Spirit

BREAKFAST WITH CHRIST

TOPIC: THE POOR IN SPIRIT

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 5:3

"Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven"

Thousands of years ago on a mountain, Jesus Christ preached what is probably the most powerful sermon you would ever hear. A section of this sermon is now popularly called 'the beautitudes'. In the next few days, we will be looking at the relevance of this sermon.

Today, let's start with "the poor in spirit". Many people have confused this message with physical poverty. Some people feel Jesus was asking us to be financially poor. The fact is being poor in spirit has nothing to do with financial poverty. So what does it to be poor in spirit?

To be poor in spirit is to be in a state of awareness that we are spiritually empty without God. It is a state of complete dependency on God. It is to be aware that we are sinful and we need God to save us. It is a state of spiritual humility. When a man is financially poor, he is always desperate to get money. When we are aware that we are spiritually poor, we will always be desperate for God.

The prize for being spiritually poor is that we will inherit the kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God is the presence of God in Heaven and in our lives. So when we are spiritually poor, we will enjoy the presence of God on earth and go to Heaven when we die.

Brethren, when we come before God, we need to understand that we need God. We don't need to be proud or self righteous. We need to acknowledge that we are spiritually empty and that we need God to save us from our sins. That is what it means to be poor in spirit. Stay blessed!

Prayer line:

Lord, I need you to survive. Please help me to live in a state of complete dependency on you. May I be poor in spirit so that I can inherit your kingdom. Amen
