BREAKFAST WITH CHRIST
TOPIC: JESUS, OUR FRIEND
SCRIPTURE: JOHN 15:15
"...Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you."
Jesus is our friend. There is no doubt about that. We all know Jesus to be our saviour but He wants us to also see Him as a friend we can rely on. In 1855, Joseph Scriven wrote a poem titled "What a friend we have in Jesus" to comfort his mother who was living in Ireland while he was in Canada. This poem was later sang as a song. So what does it mean to say Jesus is our friend?
JESUS LOVES US UNCONDITIONALLY
A friend is someone who is willing to accept you the way you are. Jesus' love for us is undeniable. "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends" (John 15:13). It was love that pulled The Lord from Heaven to die on a lowly Cross for our sins. Jesus loves you, that's why you are alive. We have a friend who loves us despite all our shortcomings. Jesus doesn't love us because we are perfect, even when we were sinners, He still loved us.
FELLOWSHIP
Jesus being our friend means He wants to have constant fellowship with us. Our Lord doesn't want us to see Him just as a distant Saviour in Heaven who died for us. He wants to be our closest companion. He wants us to wake up everyday from bed and spend time with Him in prayer. He doesn't want to be someone we only talk to on Sundays, He wants to be a friend we talk to everyday. He wants to be a friend we can rely on for help.
Brethren, we have a wonderful friend in Jesus. Anytime we feel lonely and dejected in this world, let's remember we have a friend who is closest to us than a brother, He is Jesus Christ. He is a reliable friend. All other human friends can fail us, but Jesus will never fail us. He knows all our weaknesses, yet He still loves us more everyday. What a friend we have in Jesus indeed!
