BREAKFAST WITH CHRIST
TOPIC: WORK OUT YOUR SALVATION
SCRIPTURE: PHILIPPIANS 2:12
"...continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling".
In our text for today, Apostle Paul is encouraging us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. When Jesus died on the Cross at Golgatha, He won for us our salvation. When we received Him into our hearts, we became partakers of His free gift of salvation. So if you have Jesus, you are saved but we don't have to take it for granted, we need to continue to work it out everyday. So how do we work out our salvation with fear and trembling?
What is salvation?
Salvation is the deliverance of man from the power of sin and eternal death with the impartation of the life of God. Every human being born into this world was born in sin(except Jesus Christ of course). We were condemned into eternal suffering in hell but Christ intervened and gave us salvation. Romans 10:9-10 showed us how we can be saved. We are saved if we confess the Lord Jesus Christ and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead. Salvation is a free gift from God. We don't work for it.
FEAR and TREMBLING as used by Paul in our text isn't intended to be negative. The Greek word translated as 'fear' also means 'respect' or deep 'reverence'. Same word is used when the Bible says we should fear God. That text isn't supposed to mean we should be scared of God. We can't possibly have a good relationship with God if we are scared of Him. Working out our salvation with fear and trembling means we should continuously treat our salvation with all deep respect and seriousness. Our salvation is our biggest possession, it isn't something to be joked with. It took the precious Blood of Christ to save us. We need to be very serious with our salvation.
Let's note that working out isn't the same as working for. We can't work for our salvation. Jesus already paid for it and we obtain it by the Grace of God. Working out our salvation simply means we should put our salvation into practice everyday. There are certain qualities a person who is saved must have. Love, kindness, compassion and holiness are just some of those qualities. People must see your salvation in your attitude towards them. Someone who is saved can't continue living in unrepentant sin. If you're still living in continuous sin without repenting, then there is a problem.
We work out our salvation when we stay obedient to the Word of God. Obedience isn't just about obeying some religious rules and regulations. Obedience is about obeying the voice of God in our lives. Obedience is about obeying the Supreme Will of God in our lives.
Working out our salvation also means dying to our fleshy desires every day. The flesh will always tempt us to sin but we need to overcome those temptations and live in holiness to God. If you are saved, don't take it for granted, please continue to work it out everyday.Stay blessed!
Prayer line:
Father, I thank you for saving me. Please help me to work out my salvation every day. Amen
