BIBLE STUDIES
THE CREATION OF MAN
TEXT: GENESIS 1:26-30; 2:7
Today, we start a new series I titled "Bible studies". Throughout this series, we will be taking a look at major events in the Bible from Genesis to Revelations. I trust that the Spirit of God gives us revelation of the hidden truths of the Word of God. Today, we start by looking at the Creation of Mankind.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. It took God 6 days to complete His work. During the first 5 days, God created everything man needed for His survival then God created man on the 6th day. It is very instructive to note that God only created man after he created all other things. From the beginning, we see that God is our great provider.
After the first 5 days of creation, God said 'let us make man in our image, according to our likeness... "(Gen. 1:26). So who were the 'us' God was referring to? Throughout the first few days of creation, the Bible didn't tell us that God was doing the creation with any other person or people. Bible scholars have not been able to agree on what exactly God meant by 'us'. Some believe He was referring to His Angels, others believe He was refering to the other members of His Godheaded Trinity(God the Son and God the Holy Spirit). It is also very important to note that it was only man that God said He was creating in His image and likeness.
HOW DID GOD CREATE MAN?
Genesis 2:7 recorded how God created man. According to the Bible, God created man from the dust of the earth. But man at this stage was just a motionless being formed from dust. Then God breathed into his nostrils and man became a living being. Therefore, what keeps man alive is the breath of God that dwells in us.
It is worth noting that among all the other things that was created from Day 1 to Day 5 of creation, only the creation of man on Day 6 was given much attention. The Bible didn't tell us how God created the seas or the animals.
GOD CREATED 'THEM'
In Genesis 1:27, we see something interesting about the creation of mankind. The Bible said "male and female He created them". The Bible's introduction of female here is quite interesting because at this stage of creation, we were not yet introduced to any female being created. Now it is erroneous to believe that God only created Adam on the sixth day of creation. A lot of people believe that woman was created as an afterthought by God when Adam was too lonely in the Garden of Eden. No. According to the Bible, woman was actually created with man on the sixth day. When God created man, He placed in him, a woman. So God created man, male and female right from the beginning and God blessed "them".
So in Genesis 2:21-22, God only took woman out of man and formed her into a physical being in the Garden of Eden. Woman was part of God's original plan at creation not a last minute companion for Adam. The use of 'man' in creation encompasses both the male and female sexes.
WHY WAS MAN CREATED?
This question was aptly answered by God Himself. According to the Bible, God created man to :
1. Have dominion over all the other creations. Man was created to take care of God's creations.(Gen. 1:26)
2. Be fruitful and fill the earth. Adam and Eve weren't created to exist alone. God's purpose was for them to multiply and produce many of their kind. Childbearing was part of God's original purpose for mankind.
In short, man was created to be a representative of God on earth. God is a spirit, His domain is Heaven. Man is flesh, his domain was the earth. Man was created to live forever on earth and dominate God's creation. Of course sin later changed this original plan.
In our next Bible studies, we will take a look at events in the Garden of Eden and how man fell to sin.
