BREAKFAST WITH CHRIST
TOPIC: THE TRUE WORSHIPPER
SCRIPTURE: JOHN 4:23
"Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks".
Over the past few days, we have been looking at the topic "WORSHIP". We have looked at what worship is, how to worship God and the greatest act of worship. Today, we will look at who a true worshiper is.
Our text for today is an excerpt of an interesting conversation Jesus had with a Samaritan woman at a well. According to the Jewish custom, Jesus had no business even speaking with a Samaritan woman. But through this life changing encounter, Jesus revealed something deep to the woman that He hadn't even told His disciples. Jesus told this woman the kind of worshipers God truly desires. Jesus said God desires 'true worshipers'. So who is a true worshiper?
A true worshiper is a worshiper who worships God in spirit and in truth. The Jews at Jesus' time had always glorified themselves in their observation of religious practices. But in this scripture, Jesus was telling the woman that God isn't seeking religious worshipers but spiritual worshipers.
A true worshipper worships God in Spirit and in truth. To worship God in spirit means we must first die to our flesh desires. Worshipping God isn't a once in a week thing we are supposed to do. It must be our daily lifestyle. We must die to our fleshy desires every day and connect with God in the spirit. We cannot worship God in spirit so long as we continue to obey the sinful desires of our flesh.
A true worshiper is also a person who has sacrificed his/her life to God and lives in total obedience to the word of God. A true worshiper makes God his/her priority in this world. A true worshiper's number one desire is to please God and live for Him in truth. Until our desire to please God exceeds our desire to please our flesh, we cannot be true worshipers.
Lastly, another very important feature of a true worshiper is that a true worshiper is passionate about the things of God. These days most Christians hardly make any time to do God's work. We spend so much time with our phones and laptops yet when it comes to the work of God, we give excuses. This isn't an act of a true worshiper. The true worshiper genuinely loves God, and is passionate about doing God's Will. The question we must all answer is "are you a true worshiper"? Remember Jesus said God is seeking true worshipers.
