BREAKFAST WITH CHRIST
TOPIC: THE CULTURE OF WORSHIP (Part 1)
SCRIPTURE: PSALM 29:2
"Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness".
Today, we begin an interesting journey into a very important aspect of our Christian life, WORSHIP. Worship has been a very important aspect of our human lives. Since the inception of the world, humans have always worshipped one deity or the other. As children of God, we have been called to worship our God, the Almighty Jehovah. Through out the Psalms of David, we have always been called upon to worship God. But what is worship?
To understand what worship is, let's look at what worship is not. Worship is not a song nor is it about singing a song. We grew up erroneously understanding that worship is a slow tempo song the choir sings at church. So when the tempo is high, we call it praises. What actually makes a song a worship song has nothing to do with the slow tempo nature of the song but the words of the song. Due to this erroneous understanding of worship, it is not surprising that the church only thinks about worship as singing. Worship isn't just about singing.
The modern word 'worship' comes from two archaic English words 'weorth' which means 'worth' and 'scipe/ship' which means 'shape or quality'. So 'worth-ship' means the quality of being worthy. In essence, when we worship God, we are telling Him that He is worthy and deserves to be God.
The Webster's dictionary defines Worship as "to honor with extravagant love and extreme submission". Two words stand out here 'honour' and 'worship'. So to worship God means to show honour/reverence to God. Also, to worship God means to submit to the authority of God. Worship is so important that God commanded the Moses led Israelites not to worship any other god apart from Him the Almighty God.
As Christians, worshipping God needs to be out culture. Worship has to be our everyday lifestyle. God demands constant worship from us. As we saw earlier, worship isn't only about singing. We should not limit worship to only singing. In our next BWC, we will look at the importance and the purpose of worship. Why is it so necessary that we worship God? Stay blessed!
Prayer line:
Father, you deserve all my worship and adoration. Please help me worship you with all my life. Amen
