BREAKFAST WITH CHRIST
TOPIC: OVERCOMING SIN
SCRIPTURE: GENESIS 4:7
"If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it."
Our Biblical text for today is taken from a conversation God had with Cain after he got angry because God had accepted Abel's offering and rejected his own.
Today, our focus is on the second part of the verse, which also has two meanings. First, "if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door". Meaning sin is crouching as a beast looking for a prey, in other words, sin lies dangerously in wait near thee, waiting to hold a grip on thee to fulfill it's desires. It continues by saying, it desires to have you, but you must rule over it."
The devil always sets sin traps for us waiting for us to fall into them. When you overcome one trap, he sets another one. But the devil doesn't do this independent of us, our fleshy desires also contribute to this. In our text, God told Cain and by extension all of us to rule over sin. The question is how can we do this?
God has given every Christian power of sin through Jesus Christ. OUR Lord already overcame sin on our behalf but we must also establish self control over sin. We are no more slaves of sin. The power to overcome sin daily lies in our obedience to the word of God.
God notices all our sinful passions and discontents. There's no single act that escapes His observing eye. However, when we backslide and get caught in the tight and dangerous grasp of sin like preys, God's plan is to create an escape for us (1 Corinthians 10: 13).
Let's serve God with soberness, with intentions free of malice/ hatred and let's come boldly to the throne of Grace to find mercy and Grace to help in times of need. Be blessed.

Lord, please help me exercise the power you have given me so that I can overcome my fleshy desires.
