TOPIC: THE BELIEVER'S POWER

SCRIPTURE: John 1: 12

"But as many as received him, to them he gave power to become the children of God, even to them that believe on his name"

To be a child of God is to possess power. When we accept Jesus into our hearts, automatically, God gives us the power to become His children. Every Christian posses God's divine power and authority. But what is the use of this power?

In Romans 6:14, Paul tells us not to allow sin to have dominion over us. Why? Because we have been given power over sin. When one accepts Christ and become a child of God, God gives the person power over sin. This is done through the presence of the Holy Spirit in us. A Christian is not a slave of sin. We cannot allow sin to control us. The authority to overcome sin has been given to us. Sin is an enemy that was defeated on he Cross by Jesus. Sin isn't our master. So why are we still struggling with sin? We are struggling because we don't exercise the power we have. It is possible to have power and not use it. We need to start exercising our power over sin.

Another use of the believer's power is seen in Mark 16:17-18. Jesus listed some signs that will follow those who believe in His name. When we become Children of God, we receive power to cast our demons. Demons are no match for a Christian filled with the power of God. We are not supposed to beg demons to leave us alone, we are supposed to bind them. We have authority over all demons,witches and wizards.

According to Jesus, another sign that will follow the believer is that he will take up serpent and not be hurt. The serpent here represents anything harmful or dangerous. As a child of God, God has given you the power to walk through dangerous situations and still survived. David declared in Psalm 23, that he may walk through the valley of the shadows of death but he will fear no evil. As a Christian, you have the power to survive any situation. You posses the power of heaven to overcome all challenges.

Finally, a Christian posses power over sicknesses. Jesus said in Mark 16:18 that any believer who believes in His name will lay hands on the sick and they will be healed. Child of God, you are superior to sickness because of the power of God that lives in you. The Bible says in Isaiah 53:5 that we are healed by the stripes of Jesus Christ. When you are sick, pray and believe that God will heal you.

Brethren, let's begin to exercise the power we have as children of God so that we can have a fruitful Christian life. Stay blessed.

Lord, thank you for giving me the power to be your child. Please help me exercise your divine power in me to live fruitful life for you. Amen.
